Profile of WIP

The Workgroup for Infrastructure Policy (WIP) at Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin) is involved in teaching, research, and consulting work on economic policy, with a focus on infrastructure policy. WIP is headed by Dr. Christian von Hirschhausen, who is full professor at the Faculty for Economics and Management Science, and Dr. Thorsten Beckers, who is assistant professor at the Faculty for Economics and Management Science.

Research and Consulting

Research at WIP focuses on the following topics:

  • planning, organization, financing of infrastructure facilities
  • environmental and social impacts of infrastructure provision
  • regulation of public and private utilities
  • public procurement and public private partnership in infrastructure sectors
  • competition strategies of private firms and competition policy in network industries
  • modeling of infrastructure systems and networks.

WIP has research expertise especially in the transport, energy, telecommunication, water, and waste disposal sectors. Our general aim is to apply state of the art economic theory to current policy issues. Hereby research is based on institutional economics, industrial economics, and welfare economics. Emphasis is placed on the empirical analysis of real-world phenomena and an interdisciplinary approach, integrating technical and legal issues. To that end, WIP maintains close working relationships with other institutes within and outside Berlin Institute of Technology.

Research at WIP is mainly third-party-funded. WIP also provides consultancy to a wide range of public clients. WIP has acquired considerable experience in organising and coordinating both research and consulting projects (overview of projects), frequently working together with partners from different disciplines and areas of research.

Teaching

WIP’s teaching activities are a part of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs at the Faculty for Economics and Management Science, for students in Economics and Industrial Engineering. WIP participates in the Master in Industrial and Network Economics (MINE) and the DIW Doctoral Graduate Center for Economic and Social Research.

International Conferences / INFRADAY

WIP regularly organizes international conferences on applied infrastructure research and courses for post-graduate students from all around the world, mainly in the form of the MINETRAIN / INFRATRAIN. WIP hosts the Conference on Applied Infrastructure Research (INFRADAY) every year in October. Due to these activities, and in combination with our international research and consultancy practice, the Workgroup enjoys being part of a large and excellent network of national and international practitioners, politicians, and scientists.

Hans-Jürgen-Ewers-Prize

In memory of its founder and former president of the TU Berlin, WIP awards every year the Hans-Jürgen Ewers Prize for applied research in infrastructure economics.
